In retrospect, the era in which David Lynch made his most daring work was one of those rare moments in cinematic history when artists were still considered artists, could experiment and take wild risks - and had the carte blanche and the funding to push boundaries way beyond what was acceptable and marketable at the time. 

Wild at Heart wasn’t exactly universally acclaimed, many critics including Ebert hated the film and its nihilistic tendencies, but this movie is pure Lynch and it nabbed him his only Palme d’Or.

So for the last 2 months I've fixated on doing redesigns based somewhat loosely on My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. I've had so much fun filling in the gaps and extrapolating until my version is less of a redesign and more of an AU.

Echo Parents (5. Chase)

So. A quick recap; TJ has reasonable, loving parents, with no indication that there is any problems beyond what any kid might have with their parents, potentially marred only by over-protectiveness (reasonable) Leo and Carl have overall positive relationship's with parents, with significant issues that aren't easily overcome, and contribute to their kids issues, which lead them to identify more with friends overall. Jenna, Syd, and Flynn have abusive parents, and much of the stories they have are about dealing with that, and how friends can share the burdens. Clint, Jeremy, Heather, Micha and Keith are all examples of when the support network Can't bridge the gap (In this case, their Flynn example, Keith, was taken too soon, and they had literally no positive examples to otherwise help) So, given all of that overall. What is up with Chase's parents. Going over everything, it's....strange. In all the other examples, the parents reflect the kids beliefs and values. In Chase's case, the greatest part's of his story are about his avoidance to conflict, his lack of desires, his own communication issues, and his inability to make meaningful decisions. But it really honestly doesnt seem like Chases parent's reflect this? Like, in Route 65, Chase mentions that his mom locked herself in a room, and the dad could only "Laugh awkwardly" at the impromptu outing. Then, there is the implication that they accepted the relationship, but nothing else. It is mentioned that they punished Chase for some of his behavior as a child (Which, in his own words, was dickish), like leaving TJ to clean Duke's yard alone, and there are other minor instances of mention, but nothing that leads to a really clear or obvious picture like anyone else. They held some barbiques, did some things that annoyed younger chase, and that is that. At best, given whats in Cannon (even more with the beginning phone call and Chase's remincing in Flynn's route), you could determine them as just being....normal parents. But that doesn't feel right. Its strange, for normal parents to have that much of an opposition to filmography, of all things. Carl's not wanting an art degree is a classic complaint, but Flim? Even more, it just seems...odd. Like, Chase isn't really defined by being normal. His parents seemingly not having a large impact, positively or negatively, on anything, without note, seems off. Wrong. I have ideas, of course, on things they could've been presented as. If his parents were awkward, never commuting to condemning or helping him after he came out, or even before not approving of anything he did, yet not outright rejecting him like with Sydney, that could fit Or, if Chase Felt like he had a normal childhood, and then realized he hadn't spoken to his parents in YEARS, that would also be a fitting commentary. Or if his parent's notably had a rocky relationship, more if they wanted different things out of Chase. Or even if they didn't want to have Chase at all! if they were somewhat openly resentful of being stuck together and having a child, yet not separating, and just not talking about it, that could also fit for him. Not like that is an exhaustive list, but what we do know of the Hunters is just so lacking and limp. Overall I guess I just feel like Chases parents are one of the few kind of dropped parts of Echo. Or, at least, something that wasn't handled with the kind of detail I think they really could've. Just, an untapped goldmine for things to do or talk about.

While everyone is sharing their Scooby-Doo pitches:

Mine would be three parts: Origin, Division, and Journey

Part 1 would be set in Coolsville. The gang would not have met yet and be in high school. The inciting incident is Shaggy sees. A monster. He goes to Velma because he thinks she is emo and knows about the occult. She tells him she's not emo, emos aren't the occult ones, and monsters aren't real, but does wind up helping him investigate. Fred is new in town, having moved in from the West Coast town of Crystal Cove, and is smitten with Daphne, who is already like halfway into investigating a secret society. Episode one ends with Shaggy telling from what the monster he saw was:

"It was, like, a talking dog, man!"

This part would involve a mysterious bank robbery, a mansion where any door can lead to any other, and Flim-Flam, Vincent Van Ghoul and Scrappy being the secret society who guards the Chest of Demons, which only Doos can use to seal demons in and a "13th demon, the one who escaped". It ends when the demon turns out to be a fake that Flim-Flam and Vincent were using to convince Scooby to help guard the chest, leaving the gang divided on if the chest is real, or actually just where the bank money is hidden.

Part 2 would be Shaggy, Daphne, Scrappy, and Scooby on the run with the chest, while Fred calls in a friend from Crystal Cove to help track them down: Marcie Fleach. They are bank rolled by Deacon Carswell, who wants the chest back desperately. This part would end with the gang deciding they have to be on the same side, and to do that they need to know what the chest is. They open it, releasing the demons.

Part 3 would be close to the classic formula. The gang has to go hunt down the demons, and so goes to anywhere in America where supernatural events are being claimed to happen. Sometimes it's a hoax, sometimes it's a demon, sometimes it's an unrelated source of magic. This one would introduce the Hex Girls and bring back Thorn's magic powers. In the end, Deacon Carswell is revealef to be the real 13th Demon, the Creeping One, and the gang have to defeat him in the aforementioned mansion with weird doors.

Watching Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Subspace Rhapsody

Studio Ghibli and Studio Pierrot will be collaborating on a new feature-length movie that is titled; "Cindy and the Wishing Star" (「シンディと願い星」), a new animated musical that explores how the iconic wishing star came to be, and it blends with watercolor and references on classic Studio Ghibli and Studio Pierrot flims.

Featuring the music score composer by Hans Zimmer and original songs written by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty.

Meet Cindy, the main protagonist, and lives in Lisbon, Portugal. She is Portuguese, a 19-year-old heroine who’s nice, incredibly smart and generosity, a sharp-witted leader in the making who sees darkness that others do not. She’s navigating a Kingdom of Wishes, where wishes can literally come true. Cindy makes an impassioned plea to the stars, wishing for guidance and help, and ends up bringing an actual star — a real life Starboy — down from the sky.

Cindy wears a gorgeous blue, green, dark blue, and teal dress with lots of cute jewelry such as this necklace and anklet. She also carries a tiny bag which seems to be the perfect place to store a wishing star.

Cindy will be played by Mandy Moore who won several awards such as her voice of Rapunzel from "Tangled".

The power of Cindy's wish is so great that she calls down an actual star from the sky named Starboy. Starboy is a cosmic force made up of things such as possibility, imagination and hope, but Starboy is also a little ball of boundless energy, impossibly curious and a giant beacon of chaos.

Starboy will be played by Jonathan Dokuchitz who has his singing voice of Dimitri from "Anastasia".

The setting of this film is the Lisbon from Portugal, better known as the Kingdom of Wishes, because here your wishes can literally come true. The kingdom is located by the sea and it has a creamy colour palette with lots of pillars.

"Flim-flamming?" Rebecca retorted indignantly. "These are the storied and celebrated traditions of witchcraft that stretch back to time immemorial!"

"Maybe so," Burnside answered, "but they don’t do nothin but waste time an make everbody look silly!"

"We are combining the flair of the classic witchy style with elven techniques that actually work! That’s the whole point of this coven!"

"Can't we just cut out all the theatrics an get right to the doin?"

"Being a witch is at least half theatrics!" Rebecca insisted. "That’s what gets people’s attention! It's called showmanship! That's the part they notice and remember!"

"They notice an remember that we look like a buncha theater school drop-outs!" Burnside retorted. "If I told ya oncet, I told ya a hunnerd times, we'd get more members if we dropped the cornball stuff and just got to the magick! An cuttin thangs!"

This sounded like an argument that had been repeated many times already. I didn't feel like waiting for it to play out to its inevitable conclusion, so I politely cleared my throat.

“AHEM," I coughed gently. "What else do you have to show me?”

"Not much," Rebecca admitted. "We make decent money selling natural remedies to townsfolk. Remedies that actually WORK, I might add. That has given our coven a good reputation locally. We also have a collection of books that Ash… I mean, OWTER, left as a parting gift when Burnside rescued me."

"BAH," Burnside snorted. "All o them books is either out o date, debunked, crackpot elf nonsense, or else completely wrongheaded nonsense lowfolk come up with. You keep on overlookin' what this coven actually has: MONEY an INFLUENCE! These here lowfolk simpletons are willin to pay top coin for somethin they coulda made their own selves! Our good reputation makes them locals willin to believe whatever you say! That there’s what'd impress Adler, cause that’s actually useful!"

"Not just anyone can concoct these potions!" Rebecca insisted. "It requires specific knowledge on what to gather, when to gather it, how to brew it, and when to brew it. Such knowledge has to be taught."

"You're both right," I explained diplomatically. "The herbal magick is the most impressive asset because it has direct, practical applications - and it brings in a profit. I wouldn't put much stock in books Dr. Cesawonki gave you because he hates lowfolk and is violently opposed to teaching them magick. Which brings me to my second reason for coming here: Owter told me that Queen Edessa was starting a magick school at Persoc Tor. He of course wants me to put a stop to it, but I am more inclined to let it continue - provided it does so under my authority. You seem to have been running a successful (albeit limited) operation here. You've kept it going without any major disaster for generations, and have earned the respect of the locals. Your experience would be invaluable to me when I go to inspect the Persoc Tor school."

"HOT DANG!" Burnside whooped. "I ain't never seen the Winter Palace before! Rebecca gal, you is in for a treat! Persoc Tor is the swankiest resort town in all of Faerie!"

"It's apparently been abandoned for centuries," I pointed out. "No telling what kind of shape it's in now."

"I've," Rebecca murmured, with a distant look in her eyes. "I've never even been to Faerie…"

I went to look up David Gerrold to see if I could gain some insight into why he wrote the things in Hella that he did, and he was the writer of the classic Star Trek episode "The Trouble with Tribbles" !??!?!?!?!?!!?

His Wikipedia article informed me that he is gay and a single adoptive father (wrote a semi-autobiographical book about his experience around a]having adopted his son, which was adpted into a flim starting John Cusack, but Cusack's character in the film was changed to a straight widower) paints him as a decent person.

But his article on Fanlore dot org (especially the part about his hatred of Kirk/Spock shipper) seems to be more in line with the type of author who would create a book with the problems you identified.

he did write that! it's like the first thing in his bio on the book jacket. he seems like... an interesting guy, is what I'll say. he seems to have occupied a unique position in 70s trek fan culture as someone who was between a creator and a fan. I don't think people these days could get into that position bc creators ignore fan work for legal reasons. but here's a guy who got a script published at a young age but didn't become a regular writer

if I had to guess I'd say he's a gay man who's concerned with gay men's issues. like, it seems like he did a ton of aids charity work. hating kirk/spock is almost part of that bc he was mad that women were writing weird and inaccurate portrayals of gay men. but when it comes to other the social issues he depicted in hella I don't think he was trying to be negative but he just didn't understand. sort of like the kirk/spock shippers he hated so much didn't understand what it was like to be a gay man...
